Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield is one of the most popular DIY garage floor kits at big-box stores. It’s a two-part, water-based epoxy that gives a bare concrete garage floor a gloss finish in a weekend, and it costs less than Rust-Oleum’s RockSolid line.
| Type | Two-part water-based epoxy floor coating |
| Coverage | About 250 sq. ft. (1-car kit); up to about 500 sq. ft. (2.5-car kit) |
| Finish | Gloss, with decorative flecks |
| Foot traffic | About 24 hours |
| Vehicle traffic | About 3 days |
| Use | Interior (enclosed garages) only |
What It Is
EpoxyShield is an amine-cured, water-based epoxy you mix and roll onto clean, etched concrete. It’s designed for garage floors in good, sound condition that are free of curing agents and sealers. Rust-Oleum also sells a separate EpoxyShield clear topcoat for extra gloss and wear resistance.
Pros
- Affordable, widely available kit with everything for a one-coat color finish
- Water-based with low odor compared to solvent epoxies
- Longer working time than fast-curing polycuramine or polyaspartic kits, which is forgiving for first-timers
- Resists oil, gasoline and salt once fully cured
Cons
- Thinner film than professional 100% solids epoxy systems
- You have to wait about 3 days before parking a car on it
- Hot tire pickup is a risk if the coating isn’t fully cured or prep was skipped
- Interior only; not for driveways or patios
Who Should Buy It
It’s a good fit for DIYers coating a bare, dry, sound garage floor on a budget who can keep cars off it for a few days. If you need a faster return to service or a harder film, compare RockSolid Polycuramine or a professional system from our best epoxy floor coatings guide.
Application Tips
- Degrease, then etch, so the concrete absorbs water like fine sandpaper. See how to acid etch concrete.
- Test for moisture first. Epoxy fails on slabs with moisture coming up from below. See how to test concrete for moisture.
- Work in small sections and keep a wet edge.
- Respect the full cure time before driving on the floor.
